What you need to know before hiring a rigid truck

Looking to hire a rigid truck for your small business? Whether you’re expanding your operations, moving to a new location, or just need a rental truck for odd jobs here and there, it’s important to do some research on what type of truck is best for your needs and what you need to do to get into the driver’s seat.

If it’s your first time renting a rigid truck, here’s some key questions to ask so that you choose the right vehicle for your needs, budget, and driving ability:

1. What license do you need?

If you’re after a small, medium, or heavy rigid truck, you’ll need to secure the right license to drive it. In some cases, you may need to undergo a driving test and other examinations before you can drive certain classes of vehicles.

Each state has their own regulations and tests that drivers must complete before driving a light rigid (LR), medium rigid (MR), or heavy rigid (HR) vehicle.

You should check these out well ahead of time so that you and your staff have enough time to prepare and get the necessary driving qualifications to complete your next job.

2. What vehicle brand should you use?

With so many brands to choose from, how do you know which one is going to deliver you the greatest return on investment while getting you from A to B safely?

For longer journeys and jobs where you’re transporting expensive freight, it’s important to choose a truck brand that delivers durability, reliability, and efficiency.

Thankfully, you don’t need to compromise on quality with Rentco: our top-of-the-range fleet of Volvo trucks are ready for you to hire at any moment, for any amount of time that suits your business.

3. What do you plan on using it for?

Before settling on your choice of vehicle, you should check whether a truck meets all of your requirements for the job. Some key things to consider include:

  • Is it big enough and suited to carrying the freight you had in mind? Some trucks may have a maximum load in order to be safely and legally driven around

On top of that, you’ll need to figure out what the best way is to pack and restrain your load in the truck - will it be loose freight, stacked on pallets, or consist of bulky, oversized items?

Depending on how you approach this, you could end up saving (or spending) a lot on transport costs and equipment.

  • How do you plan on loading and unloading your freight from the truck? Will you need any special equipment, such as a forklift, ramp, tail lift, or specially-trained staff to assist with shifting things around?

  • Where do you plan on using it? For example, if you’ll be driving a truck around a mining site, you’ll need to check that its the right size and weight to be safely driven on the site’s roads and ground conditions; how easy it will be to manoeuvre around the site; how much and how far the truck will be hauling around; and how much maintenance will be required to keep it in shape.
